The Nordic Centre Planica
offers plenty of enjoyment both on hot summer days and in the coldest winter. Explore the activities you can experience in Planica and treat yourself to a relaxing getaway in the beautiful valley beneath the Ponce mountains!
Planica is not only a ski‑flying venue or a starting point for a trip to Tamar — it can also be a very interesting family excursion on its own. Start from Rateče and set off to explore this picturesque Alpine valley!
Its floor is covered with glacial moraines and scree slopes. At first, you walk among hummocky meadows and pastures, later through forest.
Along the way through the valley, you can admire mountains and ridges rising up to 2,500 metres. The two‑thousand‑metre peaks of Mojstrovka, Travnik, Velika Dnina, the Ponce group, and Jalovec will leave you in awe, while the mountain hut in Tamar provides a pleasant finish to your trip.
Tamar
is a popular excursion point and one of the most beautiful Alpine valleys. The simplest option is to park in Planica and walk to the Tamar Valley — the hike takes about one hour. The parking fee is 2 euros for the whole day. Two paths lead from Planica to Tamar. One is a maintained forest trail intended only for walkers, while the other can be used for walking or for driving (in summer). You pay the parking fee already in Planica. I recommend choosing the forest trail, which runs parallel to the main road; however, if you are heading to Tamar with a stroller, you are practically limited to the main path.
Upon entering the Tamar Valley, the Chapel of Mary Help of Christians greets you first, followed immediately by the mountain hut, where they prepare good food and offer friendly service. Here you can rest, refresh yourself, change clothes, or enjoy the sun if the weather is good. We also recommend visiting the source of the Sava Dolinka near the Nadiža waterfall, located nearby.
When you return to the parking area, it is worth taking a look around Planica, where you are welcomed by the ski jumps and the interesting Nordic ski‑jumping and cross‑country centre. The trail is suitable for walking throughout the year — even when there is plenty of snow, it is usually well maintained. In summer, when the heat is intense, Tamar is an ideal place to cool down, as temperatures here are usually one or two degrees lower than in Kranjska Gora.
