Access to the Starting Point
From the apartment, cross the road and walk along the edge until you reach the cycling path. Follow the Sava river upstream toward the bridge, cross it, and after 200 metres turn left.
Route Description
Follow the left path, which leads to a small bridge crossing the river. Immediately after the bridge, turn right into the Martuljek Gorge. The trail ahead is exposed to falling rocks, so it is best to wear helmets. At first, the path ascends gently along the river, then begins to climb more steeply with the help of steps. The route then crosses a larger bridge over the river and climbs up steps on the other side, beneath a rock wall.
A few steps further, the path brings you to another bridge offering a beautiful view of the Lower Martuljek Waterfall. After the bridge, the trail turns left and ascends beneath steep slopes near the waterfall. Continue to the right across damp, almost level ground. The trail soon climbs more steeply again and after a short ascent reaches a forest track, where you turn left.
After just a few steps, you arrive at a junction where a path branches off to the right toward the bivouac Pod Špikom. Continue along the lower left path, which after a few minutes leads to the next junction. Turn left across the bridge (straight ahead leads to the Upper Martuljek Waterfall), and in a few minutes you will reach Ingot’s Hut on the Jesenje alpine meadow.
From the hut, turn right onto a less visible trail that gently ascends across the meadow. After about five minutes of walking from the hut, you reach a large chapel at the forest edge. At the chapel, turn right toward the river, where you cross via a small footbridge. On the other side, find the path that in just a few steps connects to the trail leading to the Upper Martuljek Waterfall.
Turn left and follow the path, which becomes increasingly steep. The trail then crosses a small stream and climbs steeply again on the other side. The incline soon eases, and the path leads to a junction where you continue left (straight ahead leads to the bivouac Za Akom). The trail continues in a gentle ascent across steep slopes, which can be slightly slippery when wet.
This traverse brings you to the gorge where the waterfall is located. The path first descends toward the water with the help of safety cables, and you will need to cross the stream with some care. Shortly after, the trail climbs a few steps to a viewpoint from which the waterfall can be seen. You can end the hike here or continue up the secured but very damp route directly beneath the waterfall. The ascent to the waterfall is demanding and exposed to falling rocks.
