The Vršič mountain pass at 1,611 m is the highest road pass in the Eastern Julian Alps.
The high‑mountain road leading from Kranjska Gora across Vršič to Log v Trenti has 50 hairpin bends — 24 on the Kranjska Gora side and 26 on the Trenta side.
A paved and cobbled road leads to Vršič from Kranjska Gora, passing by Lake Jasna, Mihov dom, Koča na Gozdu and Erjavčeva koča, all the way to Tičarjev mountain lodge at Vršič. Along the way, you can visit the Russian Chapel, the natural window in the Prisank rock wall, and the Ajdovska deklica (Heathen Maiden). At the top, you can rest and refresh yourself in the mountain huts. Vršič is also a starting point for Mala Mojstrovka, Jalovec, and the very family‑friendly Slemenova Špica.
The road across the pass was built during the First World War by prisoners of war, mostly Russians. The Russian Chapel above the road between Mihov dom and Koča na Gozdu commemorates their sacrifice. Due to snow, the pass may be closed for part of the year.
Vršič is considered one of the most important starting points for mountain tours to the peaks Mala Mojstrovka (2332 m) and Velika Mojstrovka (2366 m), Planja (2453 m), Prisojnik (Prisank) (2547 m), Razor (2601 m), Šitna glava (2087 m), Slemenova špica (1911 m), Sovna glava (1750 m), Suhi vrh (2109 m), as well as for shorter walks in the surrounding area.
Nearby mountain huts include: Erjavčeva koča (1515 m), Tičarjev dom (1620 m), Koča na Gozdu (1226 m) and Poštarska koča (1725 m).
